Overview
Resting traps are an important tool for adult mosquito surveillance programs that need to collect mosquitoes from the dark, sheltered resting sites they use after host-seeking or blood feeding. Unlike light traps or CO2-baited traps, a resting trap does not rely on attraction from light or host cues. Instead, it provides a protected resting habitat that can be sampled by field technicians.
The Entovate Resting Trap is designed for vector control districts, public health agencies, and university entomology programs that need a simple, field-ready method for collecting resting and blood-fed adult mosquitoes. Resting collections are especially useful when programs want specimens that may provide information about host contact, pathogen exposure, or local vector activity.
How it works: The trap provides a dark, sheltered resting location for adult mosquitoes in the field. After deployment, technicians collect mosquitoes from the trap using an aspirator or collection chamber, preserving specimens for identification, pooling, imaging, or arbovirus testing.
Key Features
-
Resting-site surveillance design: provides an artificial resting habitat for adult mosquitoes in shaded field locations
-
No light attractant required: useful where light-based collection is not desired or may bias collections
-
No CO2 required: can be deployed without dry ice, compressed gas, regulators, or timers
-
Targets resting and blood-fed females: supports surveillance workflows where physiological status is important
-
Field-portable construction: designed for easy transport, deployment, and retrieval by surveillance technicians
-
Compatible with aspirator collection: pair with Entovate aspirators for fast removal of live specimens
-
Supports live specimen handling: helps preserve mosquitoes for identification, imaging, pooling, or laboratory testing
-
University of Florida informed design: developed for practical mosquito surveillance and field research applications
Applications / Use Cases
-
Resting mosquito surveillance: collect adults from dark, sheltered habitats where mosquitoes rest during the day
-
Blood-fed female collection: sample mosquitoes that may have recently taken a blood meal for host-contact or pathogen surveillance studies
-
Arbovirus surveillance: collect specimens for West Nile virus, Eastern Equine Encephalitis, St. Louis Encephalitis, or other mosquito-borne pathogen testing
-
Field research: support studies of mosquito behavior, resting-site selection, habitat use, and species composition
-
Live-capture workflows: collect specimens for imaging, identification, pooling, or testing with Entovate’s LAMP Isothermal Heater/Viewer with Camera
-
Low-resource deployment: use in locations where batteries, light sources, or CO2 systems are impractical
-
Training programs: introduce technicians and students to resting-site collection methods used in public health entomology
